Distance Education Courses

The instructor at Penn State presents live videoconferencing lectures to one or more sites across the country. During these weekly three-hour classes, students at many of the sites can communicate with the instructor or other students. The instructor will also conduct at least two on-site classes and/or study sessions at sites having 10 or more students. Four 15-week courses are offered during each fall and spring semester. Following is a list of courses currently offered through continuing and distance education, core courses are marked with an asterisk.

  • ACS 510* Fundamentals of Acoustics
  • ACS 512 Sonar Engineering
  • ACS 513* Digital Signal Processing
  • ACS 514* Electroacoustic Transducers
  • ACS 515* Acoustics in Fluid Media
  • ACS 516* Acoustical Data Measurement and Analysis
  • ACS 519 Structural Acoustics

Special Topic Courses (ACS 498 and ACS 598)

  • ACS 498 Sound Quality
  • ACS 598 Fundamentals of Flow Induced Noise
  • ACS 598 Acoustic Imaging: theory and Application
  • ACS 598 Shallow Water Acoustics
  • ACS 598 Applied Acoustics I: Sound and Its Measurement
  • ACS 598 Applied Acoustics II: Vibration and Structures
  • ACS 598 Applied Acoustics III: Sound Sources, Ducts and Flow-Induced Noise
  • ACS 598 Sonar Signal Processing
  • ACS 598 Advanced Engineering Mathematics I
  • ACS 598 Advanced Engineering Mathematics II

June Summer Program

This program, which is an integral part of the Continuing and Distance Education Programs, offers a variety of core and topical credit courses in Acoustics in an accelerated two-week format with 10 classes per week. Students normally earn two credits per course with the option of earning an additional credit in some courses by completing additional home work or performing and documenting a specific research project. Courses currently offered in this program are:

  • ACS 510 Fundamentals of Acoustics (2 Credits)
  • ACS 511 Underwater Sound Propagation (2 Credits)
  • ACS 512 Sonar Engineering (2 Credits)
  • ACS 513 Digital Signal Processing (2 Credits)
  • ACS 514 Electroacoustic Transducers (2Credits)
  • ACS 516 Acoustical Data Measurements & Analysis (2 Credits)
  • ACS 519 Sound-Structure Interaction (1 Credit)
  • ACS 597 Vibration Isolation & Damping (1 Credit)
  • ACS 597 Active Control of Sound & Vibration (1 Credit)
  • ACS 597 Noise Control Engineering (2 Credits)
  • ACS 597 Experimental Techniques in Ocean Acoustics (1 Credit)
  • ACS 596 Individual Studies
  • ME 597 Topics in Experimental Modal Analysis (1 Credit)

Individual Studies. Selected courses are available for individual (individual or group) study. Several courses on videotape are currently being prepared for use at industrial sites. Individual courses on specific topics can also be arranged with an instructor under ACS 596 - Individual Studies.

Non-Credit Courses

In addition to credit courses, Continuing Education offers non-credit courses and seminars on Acoustics and related areas. For example the Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing Short Course held each October offers five days and half-day sessions on a variety of acoustics and sonar topics and the Short Course on Vibration Control held each October offers four days of lectures on reducing structural vibrations and their effects. There are no prerequisites for these courses. Additional plans include the development of televised technical training courses for industry.
